Chicago Public Schools Largest District to Serve Chicken Raised without Antibiotics

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) today began serving local chicken raised without antibiotics to students in 473 schools. This development comes on the heels of a fresh chicken purchase direct from the USDA earlier this fall. The district’s new scratch-cooked chicken program includes about 1.2 million pounds from Amish farms that do not use antibiotics, for a total of about two million pounds of fresh chicken in the 2011-12 school year. Students will be offered bone-in chicken two to three times each month.

CPS’ enormous purchase of chicken grown without antibiotics, made through food service provider Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality, is the first of its kind. No other district in the nation is serving this kind of poultry regularly at such a scale.

Since September 2010, Chartwells and CPS have been engaged in an investigation of the use of antibiotics in poultry production, through their participation in the School Food FOCUS (Food Options for Children in the United States) Learning Lab. Chartwells made the decision to buy chicken raised without antibiotics for Chicago schools with research and consulting support from the Learning Lab and the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming (HHIF). Negotiations with the producer, Miller Amish Country Poultry of Orland, Indiana, were facilitated with help from Whole Foods.

“Institutional and individual consumers have the power to change industrial farming practices that endanger human health,” said Laura Rogers, project director of the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming. “The routine feeding of antibiotics to livestock that are not sick is undermining the effectiveness of these life-saving drugs, which leaves children especially vulnerable. To protect them, we encourage school districts and other large institutional buyers of meat and poultry across the country to follow in Chicago’s trailblazing footsteps.”

Antibiotic overuse occurs not just on poultry farms, but throughout the American livestock industry. This project has singled out chicken because it is the most popular protein served in schools. FOCUS and HHIF advocate for conservative antibiotic use on farms because of the danger that excessive use poses in the environment, not on the plate. It is important to note that chicken produced conventionally is just as safe and wholesome to eat as chicken produced without antibiotics.

“We applaud Chicago Public Schools and Chartwells-Thompson Hospitality for raising awareness about this critical public health issue,” said Laura Stanley, Learning Lab Manager for School Food FOCUS. “As the third largest school district in the nation, Chicago has a big voice. It’s in a position to catalyze change in the school food market nationwide.”

Whole Foods Market is thrilled to be a part of this initiative. By offering a high-quality product from a vendor that we deeply believe in – Miller Poultry, who produces our Pine Manor antibiotic free chicken – to the 300,000+ Chicago public school children, we’re able to demonstrate our commitments to local communities and our vendors, which is extremely important to us. We greatly look forward to seeing this relationship flourish and grow,” said Rich Wolff, Midwest Region Meat Coordinator, Whole Foods Market.

To help other districts follow Chicago’s lead, the FOCUS Learning Lab and HHIF have developed purchasing guidelines for institutions and a Request for Proposals (RFP) template that any school district can adapt for its own use, available at the School Food FOCUS website.

Santa Letters Get Upgraded to This Century

Seth Newton, the founder of SantasPencil.com has created the most advanced Santa Letter technology currently on the market.  Only 3 days after launching the website, over 10,000 users have found that competing websites (still using the “best” software that 1993 had to offer) are becoming obsolete.  SantasPencil.com brings back the magic of receiving a letter from santa by implementing 3 simple ideas:

Idea #1: Use the opportunity for a positive message, but don’t forget to have fun with it!  Children light up like a Christmas tree when they open the mailbox to find that big surprise in a little envelope, and parents are discovering that the real magic is in the santa letter. Imagine your child beaming with pride because Santa Claus congratulated him on that A+ Spelling Test from last week. Maybe your “determined” little one has trouble warming up to the potty? A personalized letter from Santa just may be the right inspiration to help her “give pees a chance”. There are santa letter templates available for many occasions, and each one is 100% customizable.

Idea #2: News Flash - Santa Letters aren’t just for kids anymore! Grown-ups are also thrilled to find their own humorous Christmas letters in the mailbox (or under a trench coat?).  At SantasPencil.com, users collaborate with Santa to surprise that special someone, respark a romance, or just have a little fun poking fun at someone who may be on the naughty list: a letter to a boyfriend who plays too many video games, a husband who watches too much football, a wife who shops too much, or even a neighbor whose dog visits the yard too often.  New santa letter templates are being created all the time, and every word of the letter from santa can be changed before making a purchase.

Idea #3: Show users what the letter looks like before it’s mailed (crazy idea, right?).  Many Santa letter websites don’t show a preview, so users are never sure what will be delivered.  SantasPencil.com removes this confusion by displaying a full-size preview of the letter from santa in a hand written font.  With this feature users can see exactly how the santa letter will appear when it is delivered.  Simply select a template, customize, and mail it.

letter from Santa Claus is an inexpensive way to preserve the excitement around Christmas.  Dollar for dollar, there is no other purchase that will have as much of an impact on the memories of the recipient.  Just make sure to order your santa letterbefore December 5th if you want it delivered in time for Christmas!

Seth Newton is a father-to-be, an active Rotarian, and a supporter of many local charities.  Schools, churches, and other non-profits have found this service to be a profitable fundraiser.  Seth can be reached by following SantasPencil on Twitter, through Skype at seth.newton1, or through facebook when you search for Santas Pencil.

Sesame Street and Committee for Children Take on Bullying

The iconic children’s television show hosted this month a panel of anti-bullying experts, which included a representative from nonprofitCommittee for Children, creators of the Steps to Respect bullying prevention curriculum that recently showed positive effects on bullying behaviors in a randomized controlled trial.

The panel’s discussion is presented in a 5-part video series titled “Happy to Be Me: An Anti-Bullying Discussion,” and is available to parents on the Sesame Street website and YouTube Channel, along with other anti-bullying resources. Committee for Children program developer Mia Doces, M.Ed., served on the panel, which was moderated by Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, vice president of education and research at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization that produces Sesame Street. The panel also included Dr. Catherine Bradshaw of Johns Hopkins Center for the Prevention of Youth Violence; Trudy Ludwig, author, My Secret Bully; Dr. Joseph Wright, MD, MPH, Children’s National Medical Center; and Dr. Jamie Ostrov, SUNY Buffalo.

“Sesame Workshop was pleased to partner with Committee for Children on our anti-bullying campaign for preschoolers. Both of our organizations’ missions involve creating age-appropriate content to foster the development of children’s pro-social skills and to develop healthy friendships in order to reduce aggressive behaviors. We look forward to future possible collaborations to enhance children’s lives,” says Dr. Truglio.

Henry Gordy Agrees to $1,100,000 Civil Penalty For Failure to Report Children’s Toy Dart Gun Sets

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Henry Gordy International, Inc. (Henry Gordy), of Plainfield, N.J., has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $1,100,000. The penalty agreement has been provisionally accepted by the Commission (5–0).

The settlement resolves CPSC staff’s allegations that Henry Gordy knowingly failed to report the safety defect and hazard with the “Auto Fire Target Set” immediately to CPSC, as required by federal law. CPSC staff also alleges that the firm made a material misrepresentation to CPSC staff in the course of staff’s investigation into the target sets.

CPSC staff alleges that Henry Gordy knew on or about May 2006 that the target set was defective and could cause harm but failed to report this to CPSC. CPSC staff alleges that the target set is defective because if a child places the soft, pliable, plastic toy dart into his or her mouth, the toy can be inhaled into the throat and can prevent the child from breathing.

CPSC staff also alleges that Henry Gordy made a material misrepresentation to the staff in the course of the staff’s investigation into the target sets in May 2009 by not reporting all of the information Henry Gordy was then aware of.

In May 2010, Family Dollar Stores, Inc. and CPSC announced the recall of about 1.8 million Auto Fire Target Sets because Henry Gordy refused to conduct the recall [May 17, 2010]. By that time, there were three deaths associated with the target set. Auto Fire Target Sets were sold exclusively by Family Dollar between September 2005 and January 2009 for about $1.50 each. Each set came with a toy gun; soft, pliable, plastic toy darts and a small target.

Federal law requires manufacturers, distributors and retailers to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial product hazard, creates an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or fails to comply with any consumer product safety rule or any other rule, regulation, standard or ban enforced by CPSC.

Companies also must specifically report to CPSC choking incidents involving small balls, latex balloons, marbles, or toys or games containing these items or other small parts. Companies that receive information about children choking on any of these items and, as a result, dying, suffering serious injury, ceasing breathing for any length of time or being treated by a medical professional must report this information to CPSC immediately.

In agreeing to the settlement, Henry Gordy denies CPSC staff allegations as to the existence of a defect or that it knowingly violated the law.

Pursuant to the Consumer Product Safety Act, CPSC must consider the appropriateness of the penalty to the size of the business of the person charged, including how to address undue adverse economic impacts on small businesses.

CPSC is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of the thousands of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $900 billion annually. CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard. CPSC’s work to ensure the safety of consumer products—such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals—contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.

Under federal law, it is illegal to attempt to sell or resell this or any other recalled product.

To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, go online to: SaferProducts.gov, call CPSC’s Hotline at (800) 638-2772 or teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270 for the hearing impaired.
